Who qualifies
The rule comes from C.R.S. § 7-90-701[2].
A person 18 or older whose home or usual place of business is in Colorado (since July 1, 2025 the person has to hold a Colorado driver's license or ID or otherwise verify residency), or a business entity in good standing with a usual place of business in Colorado. The agent has to consent.
Owners who live in Colorado qualify as individuals and can take the registered agent role themselves. Colorado law also lets the company be named as its own registered agent. Most companies choose between someone they know in Colorado and a commercial agent service.
Changing a Colorado registered agent
The filing is the Statement of Change Changing the Registered Agent Information, filed with the Colorado Secretary of State. The fee is $10[3].
- Line up a replacement registered agent that meets Colorado's rules and agrees to serve.
- File the Statement of Change Changing the Registered Agent Information with the Colorado Secretary of State.
- Include the $10 filing fee.
- Look the company up in the Colorado business records afterward to confirm the new details.
Across the 50 states the median change fee is $15; compared with Colorado's $10, 15 states charge less and 27 charge more.
Switching to Mainstay Filing includes the Colorado change filing; it submits the form to the Colorado Secretary of State and charges the $10 state fee at cost[1].
Hiring an agent: the price
Mainstay Filing's Colorado registered agent service is $149 a year with no increase at renewal[1]. Papers served on the company are scanned and uploaded the same business day at no fee.
Other services' prices for Colorado were read from their own pages on October 20, 2026, 7 in all. First years ran $99 to $596, renewals $125 to $596. 2 of the 7 charge more from the second year on.
Colorado business survival
Agent service is a recurring cost for the life of the company. In Colorado, 75.9% of new business locations were still open after one year and 48.5% after five, per BLS data through March 2025.
Address requirements
Colorado's forms spell it out. The address has to be a physical address in Colorado, either a home or a usual place of business. P.O. boxes are not accepted.[2]
Because the Colorado Secretary of State publishes this address, owners who use their own put it on the public record.
